POY Rules:
State Champion Qualification:
6 players qualify for the state closed championship in the following ways.
- Defending Champion
- MWO Nominee
- Only 1 nominee, organizer lists tie-breaks in advance.
- Cornhusker Nominee
- Only 1 nominee, organizer lists tie-breaks in advance.
- GPO Nominee
- Only 1 nominee, organizer lists tie-breaks in advance.
- POY
- Best cumulative plus scores from POY tournaments
- Best 4 tournaments
- 1st
- 2nd
- Best cumulative plus scores from POY tournaments
Co-Champions – in the event that two or more players finish the closed championship with the highest score, all players will be declared the state champion. However, the tie-breaks listed below will be used to determine the champion with the automatic qualification to the closed championship in the following year.
Tie-Breaks
1) Common Game
2) Sonnen-Berger
3) Armageddon game
POY Standings Tie-Break:
The POY standings tie-break will be the player’s opponent’s average post-event rating not counting unrated and provisionally rated opponents.
B Group:
- 6 player round robin played alongside the closed championship
- POY standings positions 3 through 8 will qualify for the “B” group
The winner of the B-group is eligible to use his plus score from the “B” group round robin tournament in the next POY cycle. The tie-breaks listed above will be used in the event of a tie.
Conditions for being a POY Tournament:
- $2 per player contribution to the NSCA
- Flyer approved by the NSCA Board at least 2 months in advance.
Note on the Plus Scoring System:
The plus scoring system counts only the wins less losses with draws not counting.
Here is how the scoring system works for a 4 game and 5 game tournament.
- 4 game tournament
- 4 – 4 POY points
- 3.5 – 3 POY points
- 3 – 2 POY points
- 2.5 – 1 POY point
- 2 or less – 0 POY points
- 5 game tournament
- 5 – 5 POY points
- 4.5 – 4 POY points
- 4 – 3 POY points
- 3.5 – 2 POY points
- 3 – 1 POY point
- 2.5 or less – 0 POY points
